This year there are 2,871 shows taking place at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. That's 24,107 artists in 273 venues... NOT EVEN including any of the fun things taking place at the Book, International, or Art festivals.
So how do you pick? Well really you should just go out and take a chance - open a festival programme at random and pick the show that jumps out to you from the page, wander down the Royal Mile and chat to performers and people flyering (as well as watching some ace street performers!), or ask the people sitting next to you in the pub what they'd recommend. Watching something TERRIBLE and finding amazing hidden gems is all part and parcel of the Edinburgh Festivals experience.
But if that sounds like too much hard work, then go and see one of these instead:
Comedy
Books
Theatre
Music
Something Awesome
Something FUN
PHEW. Hopefully that helps! If you still feel a bit overwhelmed, then take a look at my guide on how to do the Edinburgh festival and have a cup of tea. It's going to be brilliant.
Ooh, I've got tickets for The Horne Section! Tried seeing it last year but it was sold out all the nights we were in Edinburgh.
ReplyDeleteCan I add something to your theatre list?
'Six Wives of Henry VIII' by Living Spit Theatre Company - they're a Bristol company and I saw the show when it was launched down here last year. It's amazingly funny and a really good history lesson as well! (and it's also their first time in Edinburgh!). I don't have any connection to them or anything - I just really loved the show! :-) x

Oooh thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteI am so sad that with four years of studying in Scotland I never managed to go to the festival. Your picks look amazing and I am v. much pining for it.
ReplyDeleteOh no! At least you've got a good excuse to come back....
